Ball State offers courses of study in four kinds of printmaking: intaglio, lithography, relief, and serigraphy. Courses in these techniques of printmaking present a basic understanding of the media as well as methods to take advantage of the versatility of the processes. Students are expected to go beyond mere technical proficiency and must use the processes effectively to express innovative and personal ideas.
Printmaking - The many approaches and possibilities of printmaking, from woodcuts to lithography, offer students new ways to express themselves while encouraging and challenging them to learn new methods of image making. Experimentation and creativity are encouraged through the use of traditional printmaking techniques.

The Printmaking curriculum prepares students for graduate school, careers as professional artists, fine art printers, educators and servants of their communities. Hand-process print media are presented as primary tools, connecting to a broader art making practice. Through studio work, students investigate their conceptual interests while being encouraged to explore, develop, discuss and be critical of their work.
The programs in art offer the student an opportunity to work in a variety of media and to emphasize individual development. The programs are designed to develop, in addition to technical skills, an awareness of the historical and cultural developments in art and an esthetic and personal approach to technique, composition, and subject matter in selected studio areas. Visiting artists and jurors invited on campus provide exposure to diverse ideas and...
