| About this School |
| Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (formerly California College of Arts and Crafts) is a regionally accredited, independent school of art and design in Oakland and San Francisco, California, USA. It's one of the leading art and design schools in the country.
The college offers undergraduate and graduate majors in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and writing. The college confers bachelor of architecture, bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, master of architecture, master of arts, and master of fine arts degrees.

CCA was founded in 1907 by Frederick Meyer in Berkeley as School of the California Guild of Arts and Crafts during the height of the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1922 the school moves to a new campus on the former James Treadwell estate in Oakland, where it is renamed the California School of Arts and Crafts, and then in 1936 the school becomes the California College of Arts and Crafts.
Recognizing the growth of the school and its broad curriculum as well as image reasons, the college was renamed California College of the Arts. CCA(C) dropped the word "Crafts" from its name in 2003 and is now simply known as "CCA", Many students and facilities voiced objection about the name change afterward, and still refer the school as CCAC years after the name change.
CCA's faculty and graduates have influenced, and in many cases led, almost every mid- and late-twentieth-century art movement. CCAC is closely linked to the emergence of the 1960s ceramics movement. Alumni Robert Arneson and Peter Voulkos and faculty member Viola Frey helped instigate the ceramics revolution, which established that medium as a fine art. The photorealist movement of the 1970s is represented by current faculty member Jack Mendenhall and alumni Robert Bechtle and Richard McLean. Alumni Nathan Oliveira and Manuel Neri were leaders in the Bay Area figurative art movement.
Today, Frederick Meyer's "practical art school" is an internationally known and respected institution, drawing students from throughout the world.

The Animation Program curriculum explores time-based motion and form, combining traditional character animation with a more experimental, interdisciplinary approach. Students begin the program by studying shifting weight, locomotion, characterization, timing, and emotional expression through traditional drawing and filmmaking courses. The Individualized Major (INDI) at CCA provides an opportunity for students to design and follow a personalized program of study. Students must write and present a proposal (e.g., "What I want to do and why I want to do it"), which must be approved.
Students also must be prepared to demonstrate that they have begun one or more bodies of interdisciplinary work, and that they are motivated and capable of working outside departmental structures.
The INDI major exists specifically for students whose work bridges media and disciplines that fall outside regular program and department structures. Students who are working in two or three closely related areas, such as drawing/printmaking/bookmaking or sculpture/wood/ceramics, do not always need to work within the INDI process. In this case, students are advised to work with departmental or area advisors. | |

The Photography Program takes a broad-based approach, engaging students in the most contemporary practices, as well as in the traditions and historical structures from which those practices have evolved.

Our faculty—all professional artists—represents a diverse range of styles and approaches to the medium. Students graduate with the skills necessary to pursue careers as exhibiting artists and to work in most photography-related professions.
The program's facilities enable work in black-and-white, color, and alternative processes on large and small scales alike. The facilities on the Oakland campus are staffed more than 90 hours a week and include two large black-and-white darkrooms, 12 individual darkrooms for color printing, a 42-inch RA 4 color processor, Photography Program–specific high-end digital workstations, a black-and-white- and color-compatible mural darkroom, an alternative-processes lab, a dedicated lighting studio, and much more. | |

California College of the Arts' MFA Program in Writing is a two-year course of study. Our program offers workshops in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, cross-genre writing, and playwriting or screenwriting. Rather than require you to declare a specific genre, we instead leave open the option to take workshops in various genres.
The program affirms both innovative and traditional practice, offering a flexible and rigorous course of study to support each writer's unique path. Graduate writers benefit from the dynamic and varied cultures of writing inherent in the Bay Area, just as they do studying writing at an art school where many modes of artistic expression converge and flourish.
While earning their MFA Writing degree, students take graduate seminars and undergraduate studios in painting/drawing, film/video, photography, printmaking, book arts, visual criticism, and architecture. We welcome student work that combines or crosses genres or art practices. | |
