About this School
Canisius is a private Catholic College in the North-Central section of Buffalo, New York. It was founded in 1870 by the Jesuits. It is named for St. Peter Canisius, a Dutch Jesuit of the 16th century, who was a Hollander who spent his active life as an apostle to post-Reformation Germany. As of 2005, it has about 3,200 full-time undergraduates and more than 1,500 graduate students. The 36-acre campus houses 50 buildings. The school is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Canisius College consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Wehle School of Business, and the School of Education and Human Services. U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks Canisius as one of the best regional schools in its "North Region." Notable people associated with the college include Manuel De Landa, a philosophy professor, and Mick Cochrane, an English professor. Canisius is served by two stations on the Buffalo Metro Rail. Although Canisius College enjoys the atmosphere of a small liberal arts college, it also offers the opportunity of big city entertainment. Popular programs such as the Best of Buffalo series and the annual Fall Semi-Formal dance offer students an opportunity to experience the City of Good Neighbors. Other popular student sponsored programs include Mr. Canisius, the annual Fall Concert, and Springfest. The mascot is the Golden Griffin. The school colors are Blue and Gold. The school uses the motto: "Where leaders are made". The President is Fr Vincent Cooke S.J.
