The Center for Cell Biology and Cancer Research (CCBCR) attracts graduate students from a variety of disciplines but all share a common interest in the study of mechanisms that regulate cell adhesion and motility as well as the tissue remodeling events required for progression of tumor growth and metastasis. Clarification of such basic remodeling processes has broad significance and will further our understanding of other pathological conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, vascular disease, and fibroproliferative disorders.
Ph.D. students in the program are supported by a full tuition scholarship, paid health insurance, as well as a living stipend of $23,000 per year. Some students are selected to participate in an NIH training grant. The program curriculum has been designed to minimize didactic coursework and maximize student research experience. The courses offered are literature driven and focused around topical areas consistent with the research interests of the faculty, thus maximizing the integration between the classroom and the laboratory experience.
Faculty, students, and postdoctoral fellows in the Center's training program meet weekly to discuss recent scientific advances, as well as to discuss their current research projects. The high faculty to student ratio provides an excellent environment to maximize faculty-student interactions in both formal and informal settings.
