The University of Pennsylvania is uniquely positioned to pursue its multi-disciplinary approach to criminology with faculty from a range of disciplines interested in the scientific study of crime. Penn's strong tradition of multi-disciplinary graduate groups and institutes combines with its compact geography to create great potential for integrating teaching and research from different fields. Penn's 21st Century Ph.D. in criminology explores the frontiers between sociology and demography with medical, legal, neurological, genetic and psychological perspectives on crime and crime prevention. These explorations can begin to unravel the increasing number of unexplained research findings on those frontiers.

The University of Pennsylvania offers a Ph.D. degree criminology to a small and extremely select group of students who have demonstrated an outstanding capacity for independent scholarship in the course of their master's work. Students ordinarily apply to the program after coming to Penn for their Master's degrees, or are admitted into a joint Ph.D. program between criminology and one other Graduate Group. Applicants are not encouraged to apply directly to the Ph.D. program, but rather to apply for the M.A. degree criminology, on the understanding that only one or two students per year will be able to continue on to the Ph.D. upon completion of the M.A.
