The Ph.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction is inter-disciplinary in nature. It is administered by an Executive Committee which reports directly to the Graduate College and the College of Education. Physical Education is one of several doctoral concentrations offered. This packet should supply all the materials you will need to apply for the program. Before you complete the attached application, read the remainder of these materials and the attached program description thoroughly. You should be aware at the outset that the program is highly selective and admission is available only to those who have a letter of commitment from an approved mentor.

The purpose of this program is to produce scholars who: (a) can enhance the knowledge base underlying curriculum and instruction in a variety of specializations, including areas of content as well as target populations; (b) have expertise in all levels of instruction, in the design, implementation, and evaluation of teacher preparation programs; and (c) can provide leadership to the study of curriculum & instruction by conducting research in physical education. It is expected that students admitted to the Ph.D. program will have a strong foundation in physical education. Those lacking background in the area will be required to make up deficiencies. The Ph.D. program is in Curriculum and Instruction and a core of courses in this area is required of all students. This core provides the basis for the doctoral concentration in Physical Education. In addition, a cognate area of study is required to reinforce the basic foundation in the area of Physical Education.

The concentration area allows advanced study in Physical Education. In addition to course work in the concentration area, students will be actively involved in research at all stages of doctoral study. Initially students will do research as interns under experienced researchers. Advanced research projects, a group of inquiry and analysis courses, and the dissertation research will contribute to the research emphasis in the Ph.D. program.
