The Psychological Studies Education (PSE) Area offers Ph.D. programs in Child and Adolescent Development and in Educational Psychology. The programs emphasize disciplined inquiry aimed at understanding human psychological functioning in relation to educational phenomena and problems. The programs prepare students for careers in scholarly research and in teaching with the goal of developing theory and research for the improvement of practice in education. Faculty and student research is centrally concerned with the psychology of learning, teaching, socialization, and development. Although PSE offers two distinct specializations, students and faculty in both subareas work closely together. Doctoral students work with advisors to develop an individual specialization statement and to plan a graduate study program that ranges across the major domains of psychology relevant to education. All students are expected to develop knowledge and expertise in several substantive domains of scientific psychology and research methodology and to embrace the highest scientific, professional, and ethical standards.
