The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering offers advanced studies leading to either a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering. For these seeking the MSEE degree, both the thesis and non-thesis options are available. The thesis option, Plan A, requires 24 hours of acceptable graduate-level work, including fulfilling department core course requirements, plus conducting a research project appropriate for writing an acceptable graduate thesis. The non-thesis option, Plan B, requires 30 hours of acceptable graduate work plus an additional three credit hour special problems project. This project is research-oriented in nature and may or may not be as in-depth as a thesis. The scope of Plan B special projects is determined by the student's graduate advisor and approved by the Director of Graduate Studies.
