Graduate programs define the character of a department in a research university like Boston University. Our graduate programs aim to develop an understanding of the scientific and mathematical basis of critical technologies, and prepare students to apply state-of-the-art analysis and design methods to electronic, photonic, computer systems, and software engineering problems. PhD degrees are offered in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Systems Engineering, and Master of Science degrees are offered in Electrical Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, and Photonics. Important research areas in the Department include: speech, signal and image processing; photonics; solid state materials and devices; electromagnetics; computer and communication networks; reliable and high performance computing; and software engineering. Research in these and other areas has a solid and rapidly expanding funding base balanced among government agencies, foundations, and corporate sponsors.
