The PhD Program in Environmental Design and Planning prepares a new generation of academics and professionals to deal with the diverse and complex issues relating to the next round of human development. It is an interdisciplinary, three-year post-master's degree program. In most cases, students enter the program with a master's degree architecture or landscape architecture, city and regional planning, or construction science. Because of its interdisciplinary orientation, students may be drawn from other disciplines including engineering, business, the social sciences, and humanities.
Students select a field from the traditional disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, planning, or construction to build disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary foundations. Areas of specialization will be developed subject to faculty expertise and student interest and could include urban design, health care, energy, development, community design, restoration, sustainability, landscape ecology, and building practice and technology. Graduates of this program will be well prepared to address issues relating to human settlement patter and the built environment.
