Materials science and engineering is a field broadly based in chemistry, physics, and the engineering sciences. The field is concerned with the design, manufacture, and use of all classes of materials (including metals, ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, and biomaterials), and with environmental, health, economic, and manufacturing issues relating to materials. Materials science and engineering is a field critical to future economic and environmental well-being.

The various graduate fields are not rigidly defined. Each member of the departmental faculty works in at least two of these fields and a number of subjects appear in common on the lists of elective subjects in each academic program; there is a great deal of interaction between the fields. The graduate fields are also coupled with other activities on materials within the Institute. Doctoral graduate fields include:

-Electronic, Photonic, and Magnetic Materials
-Bio- and Polymeric Materials
-Structural and Environmental Materials
-Emerging, Fundamental, and Computational
Studies in Materials Science
- Archaeological Materials
-Medical Engineering/Medical Physics
