The graduate program offered by the Department of Music leads to a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in music history or music theory. The Department of Music has traditionally prepared its students for careers as scholars and teachers in American and foreign colleges and universities; recently some of our graduates have also successfully pursued professional work in music criticism, music publishing, and the recording industry. It is the purpose of the program to develop in each student a faculty of critical judgment, skepticism, and curiosity, and to reveal methods of inquiry useful in carrying out theoretical or historical research. At the same time, the Department makes it possible for graduate students to do undergraduate teaching at Yale.
