Students who are interested in either Social or Developmental psychology or in an integration of the two fields enter through the combined Ph.D. program in Social-Developmental psychology. The philosophy of the program is that research in social and in developmental psychology will be enriched by an integration of the two areas. The program consists of a life-span developmental focus from early childhood to old age. The goal of the program is to develop competent researchers and teachers who will become contributors to the state of knowledge in these fields either in academic or applied research settings. An emphasis is placed on research activity starting in the first term of graduate study. The program of study reflects a belief that the student should develop an area of research specialization and also be exposed to the range of topics represented by the broad interests of the faculty in Social-Developmental psychology and the rest of the Psychology Department.

The general requirements for admission to the Graduate School apply to candidates for admission to this area of study. In general, applicants should have a strong science background typically including some experience with hands-on empirical research and statistical and computer analysis.
