The Graduate Center offers the Ph.D. in social welfare at the Hunter College School of Social Work. The program prepares professional social workers for leadership in human services and higher education. The program’s emphasis is to develop student capacity to contribute to social work practice knowledge. The areas of knowledge development include: the design, implementation, and evaluation of social policies and programs; clinical interventions and services; and social welfare education and training programs. The program accepts up to 15 students each year and requires that the candidate have at least three years of post-master's work experience. In any given year, the applicant pool averages between 50 to 60, enabling the program to select a highly qualified and diverse student body. Almost without exception, students remain full-time professionals while attending the program. A small pool of non-matriculated part-time students are admitted annually to specific elective classes.
