Doctor's degrees in Biology + Biological Sciences, General: A general program of biology at the introductory, basic level or a program in biology or the biological sciences that is undifferentiated as to title or content. Includes instruction in general biology and programs covering a variety of biological specializations.
The graduate program is planned by selection of an appropriate sequence of courses in consultation with the major professor and advisory committee. However, training has been formalized in several areas of specialization. Financial support is provided in the form of fellowships or traineeships from such federal agencies as NIH and NSF. Departmental teaching fellowships, assistantships, and University fellowships are available to qualified PhD students.

The department awards both the M.A. and Ph.D. in Anatomy & Neurobiology. Doctoral students also have the option of receiving specialized training in Biomedical Instruction (our "Vesalius Program"), or combining their degree with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Neuroscience (by selecting the Neurobiology Track). Students who are pursuing a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree are also encouraged to complete their doctoral work in our department. In addition to training...
The goal of the Chemical Biology Program is biological discovery, and its approach is the seamless integration of principles and experimental techniques drawn from both chemistry and biology. The focus of chemical biology is on biology, which distinguishes it from traditional chemistry, and it uses chemical tools, which distinguishes it from traditional biology. The field also has deep connections with medicine and pharmacology.
The quantitative aspects of biology, including molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology, represent the core of the program. Students in the department are encouraged to acquire a solid background in the physical sciences not only to master the applications of mathematics, physics, and chemistry to biology, but also to develop an integrated scientific perspective. The various programs, which emphasize practical experimentation, combine...
