The program normally takes five or six years to complete. The first two years are devoted to course work and to preparation for the PhD Qualifying Exam (the "General" exam). The third through fifth years are devoted to teaching, preparation for the Dissertation Qualifying Exam (the "Field" exam), and completion of the doctoral dissertation.
