Doctor's degrees in Neurobiology and Neurophysiology: A program that focuses on the scientific study of the cellular and molecular basis of the lower and higher neural functions in animals and human beings, organ system behavior and the immune response, and the control of physiological systems. Includes instruction in computational biology, computer modeling, protein biochemistry, electrophysiology, morphological basis of behavior, neural signal transduction and reception, synaptic activity, neurotransmission, sensory perception and sensorimotor interaction, inflammation and neurodegeneration, neurological and autoimmune disease, immune response, maintenance of homeostasis, and autonomic function.
The department awards both the M.A. and Ph.D. in Anatomy & Neurobiology. Doctoral students also have the option of receiving specialized training in Biomedical Instruction (our "Vesalius Program"), or combining their degree with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Neuroscience (by selecting the Neurobiology Track). Students who are pursuing a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree are also encouraged to complete their doctoral work in our department. In addition to training...
The Neurobiology and Behavior Program is founded on the principle that the study of the biological roots of behavior is essential for an understanding of animal and human behavior, as well as for insights into the causes and cures of nervous system disorders. The program offers a diverse set of research and academic experiences that reflect the interdisciplinary nature of neuroscience.
Requirements for the Ph.D. degree include one year of teaching experience, a survey course in neurobiology and behavior, and an orientation meeting with the Special Committee within the first three semesters at Cornell. The field has no formal language requirement, but one can be imposed by the student's Special Committee. The field also requires each student to give a publicly announced seminar as part of the dissertation defense.
Objectives The Department of Biological Sciences prepares students for career opportunities in professional studies and further graduate studies in areas related to biological sciences and neuroscience. Many graduates pursue careers in state and federal agencies, health care, private industry, research, and teaching. The program strives to develop a clear and unbiased method of critical and logistic thinking, an appreciation and understanding of...
The Program in Neuroscience, administered through the Division of Medical Sciences, is one of the five offered interdisciplinary programs leading to the Ph.D. degree in Medical Sciences through the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University.
The Program in Neuroscience is an interdepartmental program that links basic science and clinical faculty throughout the Harvard community. Established in 1981, the program is an outgrowth of the Department...
