Doctor's degrees in Physics, General: A general program that focuses on the scientific study of matter and energy, and the formulation and testing of the laws governing the behavior of the matter-energy continuum. Includes instruction in classical and modern physics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, mechanics, wave properties, nuclear processes, relativity and quantum theory, quantitative methods, and laboratory methods.
A student enters the doctoral program upon faculty recommendation after passing the Ph.D. comprehensive examination. Upon entering the doctoral program, each student shall select a field of specialization and establish a working relationship with a member of the faculty. With the approval of a faculty member, who normally shall be the principal advisor, the student shall inform the Chairperson of his/her major field selection and the Chairperson shall...
The Department of Physics offers programs leading to a Ph.D. with an optional M.A. degree in physics. The department offers research opportunities in experimental high-energy and medium-energy physics, particle astrophysics, theoretical particle physics and cosmology, molecular biophysics, experimental biophysics and condensed matter physics, and theoretical condensed matter, polymer, and statistical physics.
The frontier of high-energy physics is "the even smaller" and that of astrophysics is "the ever larger." Applied Physics, of which the study of condensed matter is a large part, has its own frontier, "the ever more complex," covering the interfaces of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. The Division, with its open, interdisciplinary structure is uniquely suited for innovative research in this area.
Graduate education in physics at Harvard offers students a variety of opportunities extending over a diverse range of subjects and departments. The interdisciplinary nature of graduate research is reflected in the dissertation topics of doctoral candidates, and the fact that in many cases faculty members outside the Department of Physics serve on dissertation committees.
In keeping with the diversity of individual programs, degree requirements in...
The emphasis of both the undergraduate curriculum and the graduate program is on understanding the fundamental principles that appear to govern the behavior of the physical world, from phenomena in the small-scale domain of subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the universe, spanning a spatial range stretching from 10-18 m to 1026 m. At each level of structural organization, active and exciting areas of investigation abound. Topics range...
