About this School
Emporia State University (ESU) is a comprehensive Regents university serving residents of Eastern Kansas. ESU is located in the city of Emporia, in Lyon County. ESU is just east of the Flint Hills and within two hours drive of the three major metropolitan areas of Kansas: Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City. The Emporia State University campus, originally 20 acres (80,000 m² ), now covers 200 acres (800,000 m²) . Originally known as the Kansas State Normal, the school has gone through several names. These include:
  • 1923 - Kansas State Teacher's College
  • 1974 - Emporia Kansas State College
  • 1977 - Emporia State University (permanent name) The Teacher's College is the university's college of education. The Teacher's College was recently cited as one of the top four teacher preparation programs in the United States along with Stanford University, Alverno College, and the University of Virginia. The School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) is well respected, as is the Department of Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) that offers the only instructional design and technology Master of Science degree in Kansas. IDT's Master of Science degree is offered entirely online. The University is the home of the William Allen White library and the National Teachers Hall of Fame. The ESU mascot is the Hornet. The Kansas Board of Regents is undergoing a search for a new University President. On January 25, 2006, Kay Schallenkamp (BS, Northern State University; MA, University of South Dakota; Ph.D, University of Colorado, 1982; all in communication disorders) was selected as the president of Black Hills State University in South Dakota starting July 1, 2006 .
