The best mathematics teachers combine a passion for teaching with a thorough knowledge of mathematics. The Master of Liberal Arts (ALM) in Mathematics for Teaching Program helps students work on both aspects of this equation. Courses challenge teachers to explore mathematics in new ways. As master’s candidates, students learn from Harvard mathematicians who use their specialized expertise to take lessons well beyond basic mathematics.
In the introductory courses (MATH E-301 through E-306) we delve into the mathematical theory behind standard middle and high school subjects such as algebra and geometry. Classes also include explorations of educational activities and applications relevant for use in middle and high school classrooms. In the upper-level courses (MATH E-311 and higher) we move considerably beyond the fundamentals, investigating principles underlying such concepts as the topology of the real number system, the existence of non-Euclidean geometries, and the creation of rigorous mathematical proofs.
Though the ALM in Mathematics for Teaching Program was created with math teachers in mind, other professionals interested in refreshing their math knowledge for a possible change to the teaching profession are welcome. By examining and practicing various instruction methods with fellow teachers during lesson-study sessions, students enhance their teaching abilities while boosting their mathematical skills. The program culminates in the master’s thesis project, which allows candidates to thoroughly investigate a particular aspect of math education under the guidance of a Harvard faculty advisor.
