| About this School |
| Green Mountain College is a private liberal arts college in Poultney, Vermont, USA.
Founded in 1834, the school is located in the Vermont countryside, in the Green Mountains, which run north-south along the western half of the state of Vermont.
Green Mountain College (GMC) focuses on a curriculum of the values of the environment and healthy communities, embracing and advancing an evolved sense of progressivism and social conscience. The school's strongest programs include environmental studies, education, English, philosophy, art, and adventure recreation.
Also, as a founding member of the Eco League, a consortium of six environmentally oriented colleges and universities throughout the United States (consisting of Antioch College, Alaska Pacific University, Prescott College, College of the Atlantic, and Northland College), GMC offers an opportunity to enter their profession with a well-developed understanding of the needs of their material and social environments.
GMC is home to an educational tract, known as the Progressive Program. Formed on a philosophy similar to that of Goddard College -- another Vermont institution famed for its dedication to progressive education, based on the ideas of philosopher John Dewey -- the students in the program define their own educational goals and work with faculty members individually to meet them.
Green Mountain College is currently attempting an enrollment increase to 1,000 students and adding a Master's degree program in environmental writing.
