About this School
Hood College is a co-educational liberal arts college located in Frederick, Maryland. The college serves approximately 936 graduate students and another 1,185 undergraduate students.

History
The college was founded in 1893 as the Woman's College of Frederick by the Potomac Synod of the Reformed Church of the United States. In 1897, the college received a 28-acre tract of land for its campus from Margaret Scholl Hood. In recognition of this, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the college to Hood College in 1912. Hood was originally a women-only college and did not admit men until 1971 as commuter students. Men began to be admitted on a residential basis in 2003, making the college co-educational. The same year, Hood College petitioned a court to allow them to withdraw operating funds from their endowment. The court filing stated that "Without court approval of these proposed transactions, it is likely that Hood College will be forced to cease operation in the near future. The college has insufficient cash to cover anticipated operating expenses over the next several months."
