About this School
Illinois College is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ and Presbyterian Church (USA) located in Jacksonville, Illinois. It is the oldest college in Illinois, founded in 1829 by one of the famous Yale Bands -- students from Yale University that travelled westward to found new colleges. It briefly served as the state's first medical school from 1843-1848, and became co-educational in 1903. Beecher Hall, the first college building erected in Illinois, is named after its first president, Edward Beecher, sibling to Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Illinois College has a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, one of only eleven in the state. Illinois College has recently developed the The Illinois College Academic Honor Code. This oath is intended to commit IC students to preserving their intellectual integrity: "As a member of the Illinois College academic community, I promise to preserve and enforce the Honor Code and everything for which it stands. I will present my work in compliance with the Rules of Academic Integrity listed in the Honor Code. I will report any transgressions that I witness to the professor of the class in question. I will never break the honor of this institution, and if I do so, I will accept the consequences of my offenses, as outlined in the Honor Code." The college participates in an Intercultural Exchange program with Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. Each spring 25 Japanese students come to Illinois College to live and study for five weeks.
