The Medical Coding Certificate Program is designed to prepare graduates for employment
as medical coders in hospitals, physician offices, nursing homes, ambulatory care
facilities, and insurance companies. Students are trained in evaluating and interpreting
health records and reports in order to accurately code diagnoses and procedures
according to recognized classification systems. This program will also provide
students with the basic skills and knowledge needed to submit medical claims for
reimbursement, process bills, and operate medical office software.
Graduates of the Medical Coding Certificate Program will be eligible to take
the coding certification examination administered by the American Health Information
Management Association (AHIMA). Since this exam is not entry-level, AHIMA recommends
that students have one year of work experience before taking the certification
exam.
Successful completion of this program qualifies a student to apply for a Certificate
in Office Technologies—Medical Coding
