Medical technologists, also known as clinical laboratory scientists, analyze human blood, tissues and body fluids or supervise the performance of medical laboratory tests using a wide variety of instruments, microscopes, computers, chemicals and other methods of clinical analysis. They perform laboratory tests necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. There are several different areas in which a Medical Technologist can work including clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), microbiology, TB/mycology, molecular biology, urinalysis, toxicology and management. The majority of Medical Technologists work in hospital laboratories, while others are employed by private physicians, public health agencies, independent laboratories, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies or industrial medical/research laboratories.
