The Nursing Assistant program offers students the opportunity to acquire a working knowledge of basic nursing assistant skills and principles of restorative care. The overall objective is to provide students with the training necessary to furnish caring service, and respect to the residents of a care facility. Student participate in clinical experience.
General Entrance Requirements
Students must be able to follow written and oral instructions. Physical requirements include walking, standing, and the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. A basic knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and the use of fractions is essential. Students must be able to read and understand complex instructional material in the areas of safety and the use of equipment. Students should possess good communication skills in order to convey patient information to others. All students must successfully pass a criminal background investigation and have documentation of a negative two-step tuberculosis test and a physical exam (within the previous year) prior to admission to the program.
Instructional Equipment
Instructional equipment includes, but is not limited to, manual and electric hospital beds, patient mannequins, mechanical patient lifts, wheelchairs, computers and vital signs equipment.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions in hospitals, home health nursing, hospice, private-duty care, attendant care, personal care homes, and rehabilitation facilities. Graduates will be able to sit for the "Competency Evaluations for Nurses Aides in Pennsylvania" examination. Successful completion of the competency test meets OBRA regulations and will certify graduates for entry-level employment in nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.
