The phlebotomist is a member of the health care team that deals directly with the patient obtaining blood samples for laboratory analysis. Phlebotomists are trained to collect blood and other biological samples using a variety of equipment and techniques. Attention to detail, good inter-personal communication skills and compassion are important characteristics of a good phlebotomist.
Edison Community College offers a “Short Term Technical Certificate Phlebotomy.” Students take courses that will help attain the skills needed to work as a phlebotomist. Skills needed include keyboarding and computer usage, medical terminology as it relates to body systems and diseases, phlebotomy and laboratory skills and professionalism. The program includes an internship at an affiliated health care facility where confidence and experience can be gained.
