The Radiological Control Certificate provides the student with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to evaluate a worksite requiring radiological controls and to design plans to minimize personnel exposure to radiation,perform required radiological surveys for radiation and radioactive contamination, work within the standards of a radiation protection program at a nuclear or DOE facility within the boundaries of radiological protection standards, examine radiological survey data to detect possible errors in procedure or equipment operation and resolve the errors. It is designed to follow training requirement guidelines established by accrediting organizations for training and qualification of radiological protection technicians (e.g., Institute for Nuclear Power Operations).
The curriculum also includes courses that prepare the graduate for work in nuclear plant operations and operations at Department of Energy sites and within other industries requiring radiation protection support (e.g., universities and industrial users of radioactive material.).
This certificate provides the educational background in the use of radiation in diagnostics and procedures utilized at DOE facilities, medical treatment and applications,and potential expansion of nuclear power technology. It offers the student an opportunity to obtain the education and knowledge that will put the graduate in demand by any organization or business that handles radioactive substances to include advanced manufacturing, life sciences, research reactors, the nuclear power industry, hazardous waste removal companies,and government agencies.
