| History |
|
The college was founded in 1812 as Williamsport Academy, by staunch Presbyterians. It was Williamsport's first elementary and secondary school. By 1848, the city of Williamsport had established a public school system, and the preacher Rev. Benjamin H. Crever persuaded the Methodist church to buy the school. It was renamed Dickinson Seminary, and college preparatory courses were offered. Rev. Crever is thus considered the college's founder.
The seminary operated as a private boarding school until 1929, when a college curriculum was added and it became the Williamsport Dickinson Junior College, the first private junior college in Pennsylvania. In 1947, the junior college became a four-year liberal arts college and adopted the name Lycoming, which derives from the Native American work "lacomic," which means "Great Stream."
