The art metals emphasis is designed to encourage and assist students interested in pursuing a professional career as an artist working in jewelry, metalsmithing, and/or related fields. We are looking for students with a firm foundation in the basic skills of the media and an interest in pursuing innovative work that explores contemporary issues. Based in traditions of function and adornment, the field of art metals engages multiple social and cultural issues. Students are encouraged to explore cross-disciplinary work in order to develop a mature artistic understanding of the complex relationships between the art metals field, other arts, and society. The art metals studio has an array of technical equipment that will suit any M.F.A. candidate’s interest, from forming skills to computer technology.
