Program Goals
Upon completion of the Daemen College Athletic Training program the graduate will be able to:

1. demonstrate knowledge and skills needed to be a successful certified athletic trainer. Each student will be expected to:
a. meet all departmental and college requirements for graduation.
b. pass the Board of Certification Exam within one year of graduation.
c. obtain employment as an entry-level athletic trainer or be enrolled in advanced studies within one year of graduation.

2. demonstrate cultural competence and effective communication through written, verbal and non verbal means with patients, family members, and the sports medicine team. Each student will be expected to:
a. demonstrate compassion, caring, empathy, and integrity as evidenced by evaluations from practicum supervisors.
b. demonstrate ethical behavior as evidenced by evaluations from practicum supervisors.
c. demonstrate professional conduct as evidenced by evaluations from practicum supervisors.

3. utilize the principles of evidenced based practice. Each student will be expected to:
a. develop a research question related to the field of athletic training
b. write and present a research project related to the field of athletic training.
c. provide evidence to support treatment choices

4. demonstrate sound problem solving and clinical reasoning skills. Each student will be expected to:
a. select and administer appropriate, valid and reliable examination tests and measures of impairments; functional limitations, and disabilities.
b. evaluate examination data to generate an accurate and defensible athletic training diagnosis.
c. render independent judgments concerning patient needs.

5. value the importance of continued personal and professional growth through lifelong learning. Each student will be expected to:
a. articulate continuing education requirements and tracking set forth by the Board of Certification.
b. describe the importance of accountability in athletic training practice and in personal and professional growth as an independent learner.

6. function, safely, effectively, and efficiently as a professional in the health care environment. Each student will be expected to:
a. abide by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Code of Ethics.
b. abide by the Board of Certification Standards of Professional Practice.
c. abide by the State Practice Law.

7. demonstrate leadership qualities and commitment to the profession of athletic training. Each student will be expected to:
a. be involved in a community event such as a summer sports camp or health fair.
b. become a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association.
