The M.S. degree can generally be completed in one to two years of full-time study. Most courses are offered in the evening for the convenience of the working student.
Non-thesis Option (Scholarly Paper - 36 credits)
1. Graduate students must take three of the following core courses: Ecological
Systems (BIO 614), Regulatory Physiology (BIO 615), Graduate Genetics (BIO 640),
Graduate Cell Biology (BIO 650), and Graduate Microbiology (BIO 674).
2. Two laboratory courses are required.
3. Elective courses may be at the 500, 600, or 700 level. Only two courses may
be chosen at the 500 level without specific approval following petition to the
Director of Departmental Studies. With approval of the supervisory committee,
up to 12 credits may be selected from graduate offerings in other departments.
4. A minimum of a B average is necessary for graduation. In general, a degree
will not be awarded to any student who receives 3 credits of F or 6 credits
of C.
5. Scholarly Paper course (BIO 796), a literature review and critique of a specific
field of study in biology is also required.
