The MFA program in creative writing at Columbia University's School of the Arts offers concentrations in fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction, and features a curriculum driven by a rigorous approach to literary instruction, and a faculty that is deeply committed to the work of its students. We seek students looking to deepen their artistic practice, who want to participate in a thriving, diverse community of writers.

Our workshops, master classes, seminars, and lectures are created for writers by writers who discuss student work and examine literature from a practitioner's perspective. We draw fully on the cultural resources of Columbia University--its faculty, libraries, archives, scholarly centers, diverse students, and wealth of facilities, and our stunning and ever-growing list of accomplished alumni attests to the depth and seriousness of our program. The other Divisions of the School of the Arts--Film, Theatre, and Visual Arts--enrich the Division's programs, and offer the possibility for fertile artistic collaboration. The 28 departments of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offer courses that provide incomparable opportunities for a developing writer, and our own events and programs, including the Creative Writing Lectures, and the Nonfiction Dialogues, bring in world-class writers to talk with students about a provocative range of literary topics.
