This 41-credit program in Dual Language/ Bilingual Middle Childhood Special Education is designed for individuals who currently hold a valid New York State certification in general education at the Middle School level. It provides teachers and prospective teachers fluent in Spanish with the preparation they need to work in bilingual and dual language settings with the wide range of learners in grades 5 through 9 who may be in today's general, inclusive, or special education settings.
In addition to receiving the same broad preparation as special education graduate students, you will delve into the academic, social and political issues surrounding the education of children for whom English is a new language. Special attention is paid to pre-adolescent and adolescent immigrants and new arrivals into the school system. You will learn and practice specific skills that will allow you to work effectively in dual language settings.
The program prepares dual language / bilingual teachers to work collaboratively in inclusive and special needs classrooms, work with parents, utilize community resources, and act as advocates for the children they teach.
