The Program in East Asian Studies focuses on China, Japan, and Korea-through the perspectives of history, the humanities, and social science. Course work traces the development of these three countries through the classical age, the Buddhist age, the neo-Confucian age, and the Western age. From this beginning, the student may choose a direction from the course offerings, keeping in mind the specific area requirements. The final requirement is a substantial paper that brings synthesized perspectives from two (or more) disciplines to bear on a limited topic within the student’s area of concentration.
