This M.A. program differs from those of most other departments. First, it has a separate core curriculum, and the M.A. degree is not offered as a consolation prize for unsuccessful Ph.D. candidates. Second, we offer substantial flexibility in the choice of elective courses. The M.A. program therefore provides a self-contained terminal professional degree. The structure of the program is similar to the Ph.D., but requires eight courses. In addition to satisfactory completion of a core curriculum, passing the comprehensive exam is also required.
