The Education Department at Columbia College Chicago offers the Master of Arts in Teaching degree within two graduate programs; Elementary Education K-9 (MAT, 41 hrs.). A student-at-large option is also available in this department only.
The primary goal of the Education program is to create teachers who foster collaboration, critical thinking and reflection, consciousness of self and of cultural diversity. In particular, the department has a commitment to support the ongoing development of teachers who are entrusted with the education of urban communities. The program will prepare teachers who are both artists and scientists, able to skillfully blend the artistic elements of teaching decisions and pedagogy in the dynamic act of teaching. Graduates of the program will be teachers who will act as change agents in the schools: knowing not only what to teach and how to teach, but also how to make a difference in the lives of students.
Through both theoretical and practical learning experiences, the program address the needs of the modern urban classroom. Teacher candidates are exposed to the latest in computer and other related technologies. They also receive multicultural training, which focuses on both skills acquisition and curriculum development. Finally, teacher candidates will learn what it is to be a leader and come to understand issues of empowerment of themselves as well as of children.
Elementary Education
This program prepares candidates to teach in self-contained elementary classrooms and includes the option of one or more middle-school endorsement areas. Emphasis is placed on using a variety of art forms to deepen student learning.
