Program Mission and Philosophy
Within the conceptual framework of the College of Education and the department of Curriculum and Instruction, the mission of the program is to prepare school library media specialists and educational technologists at the advanced level who will be:
  • well educated in the knowledge base of the discipline;
  • effective leaders and collaborators in their roles as information and technology specialists;
  • reflective practitioners dedicated to fostering lifelong learning in the education community, and in demand for employment locally, regionally, and nationally.

    Goals and Expected Results
  • all candidates will pass the portfolio review, which will evaluate their work according to American Library Association/American Association of School Librarians (ALA/AASL), and Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) program standards;
  • all graduates of the School Library Media concentration will pass the Praxis II test for certification as a school library media specialist by the second attempt;
  • eighty percent of School Library Media graduates will be employed as library media specialists within one year of graduation. All Educational Media and Communications graduates will either be employed in a technology position or will be implementing technology within their current positions upon graduation;
  • graduates will receive positive evaluations from their employers.
