-Degree Requirements-
Management, in essence, is the act of assigning resources to attain organizational objectives. Leaders and managers are those individuals that hold positions of authority in organizations and actually make those necessary resource decisions. For these individuals to fulfill their roles successfully, they should understand the methods of establishing the right organizational objectives, assigning those objectives to tasks, and dividing tasks to various processes, jobs, and people. This understanding can be gained through a study of personnel, leadership, and strategy.

The sequence builds on courses in the core of the curriculum. After gaining a general understanding of management and organizational behavior, students in the Leadership Management sequence begin by acquiring a fundamental understanding of one resource that is common to all organizations—human resources. Thus, the Personnel Management course explores personnel issues and systems through job analysis, selection, performance appraisal, training and development, benefits, and equal opportunity issues. The ideas taught are further reinforced with an in-depth review of leadership theory and the practical importance of leadership to organizations in the Seminar in Contemporary Leadership Theory & Application course. This course gives students the ability to harness the tools taught in the Personnel Management class more effectively. Finally, the sequence culminates with the strategic management course that gives students hands-on experience in crafting, analyzing, and evaluating organizational strategies.

Electives provide for exploration of management responsibilities at the organizational policy-making level, and to learn and practice the art of organizational and management research. Students planning to pursue a management research study may take additional courses focused on the design of behavioral science studies intended to extract information from human subjects and the statistical analysis of such data. The sequence
also provides a framework to more thoroughly understand the ideas that students are exposed to in the context of Operations Management, Life Cycle Design, and the Management of Engineering Operations.
