The Program in Modern European Studies focuses on the history, thought, literature, art, politics and cultures of Europe from the 18th century to the present to develop a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the modern period. Each candidate in Modern European Studies chooses an individual course of study in consultation with the program coordinator. Each program takes into account both personal interests and distribution requirements. Since the purpose of the Liberal Studies Modern European Studies M.A. Program is to provide both depth and breadth of knowledge, students distribute their course work across several different disciplines and also choose a field of concentration within the broader offering. This concentration may be defined geographically (Germany), chronologically (post-WW II), topically (romanticism) or by some combination of these (Victorian England). Students conclude their program with a substantial paper that brings synthesized perspectives from two (or more) disciplines to bear on a limited topic within the student’s area of concentration.
