Graduate Studies in HES: Serving a World in Need
Helping to enrich the lives of individuals, families and communities is some of the most rewarding work a person can undertake. If you are interested in families leading healthier, happier lives, then a Fontbonne University master’s degree human environmental sciences (HES) with concentrations in child and family studies or multidisciplinary health communication studies could be for you. Our graduate program provides a strong professional knowledge base to enhance skills in advocacy and leadership, enabling graduates to effectively work with individuals and families locally and globally.

Access to information and resources that help people attend to their personal and family needs is often not readily available. In 2005, approximately 20 percent of Missouri families were living below the poverty line — trying to exist on less than $25,000 annually. In many cases those families did not know how or where to find help. As people are in need of a variety of public/community assistance, the need for qualified people to serve individuals and families will rise 19 percent over the next eight years, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Additionally, there will be continued growth in the job outlook specifically related to health promotion and health communication. Job growth of 18-26% is expected in public relations, technical writing and editing, and health education. Earning a master’s degree in HES prepares you to work in a variety of settings, including for-profit and not-for-profit institutions that meet the health, wellness, food, shelter, clothing, financial, employment and literacy needs of those they serve. This master’s degree provides a diverse knowledge base for an ever-changing world.

Reliant on the content expertise developed through their studies, Fontbonne University human environmental sciences graduates provide leadership and advocacy to empower individuals, strengthen families and develop communities.
