In this small, personalized program, coursework and fieldwork inform one another. Students pursue a challenging curriculum combining Jewish studies and education studies with an intensive internship that serves as a context for learning to teach. Students study with members of the Jewish day school cohort as well as with members of the public school MAT cohort.
The four-semester, full-time program begins with a five-week summer session, includes an academic year of study and an internship in a Jewish day school, and concludes with an additional five-week summer session. Students spend much of the academic year learning to teach in a local day school under the guidance of skilled mentor teachers and Brandeis teacher educators.
The Elementary MAT (DeLeT) program, formerly known as the DeLeT Fellowship program, prepares beginning Jewish day school teachers for grades one through six, and serves as a site for studying the goals, curriculum, and impact of Jewish teacher education. Students earn a Master of Arts in Teaching elementary education and are eligible for initial teaching licensure (grades 1 - 6) from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
