Master of Science in Education: 40 credits
This program was designed to accommodate working professionals, many of whom live at a considerable distance from New York City. It prepares educators for leadership positions in museums or cultural institutions. Small classes meet one weekend a month during the academic year for two years, with an annual five-day June Institute. The classes are taught by outstanding practitioners and Bank Street Graduate School faculty.
Year One provides the foundation for effective program and audience development with classes on human development, learning theory, exhibit development, and program design and evaluation. Year Two focuses on organizational management including leadership styles, understanding the role of the mission, strategic planning and board responsibilities, marketing, financial management and staff development.
Students meet monthly with their individual advisors and also with their small conference group. Each advisor, who is an experienced educator and manager, visits his or her advisees in their work settings. Course work includes visits to cultural institutions and interviews with people who set the standards for the field.
Career Opportunities
Our graduates hold leadership positions as museum directors, deputy directors of interpretation, heads of education, principals of exhibition design firms, program officers, and other positions in a wide variety of settings. Graduates and current students are available to speak with prospective students on request.
