The Mathematics and Computer Science Department offers graduate study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Mathematics. The goal of the faculty is to provide excellent instruction in advanced mathematics and to maintain a supportive environment for graduate students. Students who complete the program should be equipped for careers in community college teaching or positions in industry that require knowledge of mathematics beyond the undergraduate level. The M.S. degree Mathematics can also serve as preparation for advanced study toward a Ph.D. degree mathematics or a related field.

Our program features small classes that allow for close contact between students and faculty. Many graduate classes are offered in the late afternoon or early evening, making it possible for working students to attend. Courses toward the M.S. degree may also be taken during the summer quarter. Students may begin their studies in any one of the four quarters.

Student Learning Outcomes
Students graduating with an M.S. in Mathematics from Cal State East Bay will have acquired the knowledge and skills listed below:


1.Technical competence including uses of calculus, linear systems, differential equations; understanding of axiomatic systems; ability to read and create proofs; ability to analyze and classify structures in different areas of mathematics;

2.A fundamental understanding of Mathematics theory including: (a) applications of calculus, linear systems; (b) relations of algebraic systems and classical problems; and (c) roles of definitions and proofs in algebra and analysis;

3.A command of the fundamental areas of Applied Mathematics, Theoretical Mathematics, or the teaching of Mathematics; the ability to read mathematical articles;

4.Ability to work effectively as team members;

5.An understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities and appreciation of the impact of mathematics in the societal context;

6.Ability to communicate effectively, both in written and oral form.
