In the School of Music, students study with composers who are significant figures in the contemporary music scene. Performance opportunities with ensembles and Boston University Symphony Orchestra are combined with comprehensive training in theory, counterpoint, harmony, orchestration, and contemporary techniques. Applicants must meet the general prerequisite requirements of the MusM program. Students must be proficient in one modern language, preferably German, and must satisfactorily complete an examination in music theory. In addition, each applicant in theory is required to submit:
analytical papers and may include examples of original compositions.
at least one example of tonal composition such as a fugue, short sonata movement, or other compositions of an academic nature.
two letters of recommendation.
A performance audition is not required for admission to the MusM program in theory. However, students must satisfy a basic keyboard proficiency requirement to receive the MusM degree theory.
