Motivated by the desire to make a difference in the world, help others, or foster the mission of a cause or organization close to your heart, you enter the nonprofit world. After developing a track record of real service, you are called to take a larger role in the management and administrative areas of the organization. But your background and experience are more closely aligned with the program and service side of nonprofit work. How can you gain the necessary skills to be an effective manager in the highly competitive world of nonprofits? How can you foster the ideals of your organization's mission with practical business wisdom?
The Nonprofit Management major at the College of Notre Dame combines theory with practical application. The curriculum draws together courses designed to meet the unique challenges of the nonprofit sector. Core courses provide a strong foundation in nonprofit management tools, methods, skills and competencies. The Nonprofit Management core emphasizes critical and strategic thinking, managing and leading others, effective writing and speaking, fundraising and marketing, and financial oversight. Students explore critical areas of major change in the nonprofit sector, program evaluation and the changing relationship with government. Strategic positioning is the focus of the final capstone course. Students who are not currently working in the nonprofit sector have hands-on exposure to the day-to-day realities of nonprofit organizations through a practicum experience.
The major also provides students with the flexibility to explore a range of related additional areas in greater depth. These electives include selections from Nonprofit Management and Business, Economics, Communication Arts, Human Services and Political Science. Nonprofit Management majors must have a minimum grade of C in all required courses.
