Program Purpose
The Portuguese Language specialization is a liberal arts program that aims to master skills in critical thinking, written expression and oral proficiency in the Portuguese language. The specialization should provide a depth of understanding of and an appreciation for Portuguese Linguistics and the Portuguese and Brazilian literary traditions and the cultures that the language represents.
It is designed to serve students who plan to enter the learned professions or pursue other career paths (especially teaching) that require perceptive reading, orderly and clear thinking, intellectual maturity, effective writing and advanced oral communication.
It is designed to establish habits of broad spiritual thought and appreciation that will provide a source of life-long personal betterment and service to the extended community.
Expected Learning Outcomes
1. THEORY: Articulate a sound understanding of the broad outlines of theory as well as the theoretical commitments that inform their own research and writing.
2. LITERARY FORM: Demonstrate advanced application of tools of literary analysis.
3. LITERARY HISTORY: Demonstrate a broad knowledge of and an ability to think critically about literary movements and key texts of the Lusophone literary tradition(s), including an evaluation of the process of canon formation.
4. PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION: Demonstrate a familiarity with professional practices and issues (conferences, research, publication, mentoring, hiring and advancement, etc.) and prepare to enter doctoral programs or other professional fields.
5. ORIGINAL RESEARCH: Exhibit an ability to identify relevant issues and conduct original research in the field of Portuguese, Brazilian, or other Lusophone Literature(s), to use appropriate methods of documentation, and to write professional-level essays.
