The Sociomedical Sciences Ph.D. program is interdisciplinary, with study divided between the Mailman School of Public Health and one department in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences ( Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology ). The aim of the program is to train researchers and teachers to apply social science theory and methods to the study of social factors related to health status and health care needs, the social structure of health care delivery systems, and the relation between these systems and the populations they are designed to serve.

Fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success. Teaching and research experience are considered an important aspect of the training of graduate students. Thus, graduate fellowships include some teaching and research apprenticeship.
