Program Purpose
The Hispanic Linguistics specialization is a liberal arts program that aims to master skills in critical thinking, written expression and oral proficiency in the Spanish language. The specialization should provide a depth of understanding of and an appreciation for Hispanic Linguistics and the literatures and culture that the language represents.
It is designed to serve students who plan to enter the learned professions or pursue other career paths (especially teaching) that require perceptive reading, orderly and clear thinking, intellectual maturity, effective writing and advanced oral communication.
It is designed to establish habits of broad spiritual thought and appreciation that will provide a source of life-long personal betterment and service to the extended community.
Expected Learning Outcomes
1. Provide students with a detailed knowledge of the Hispanic Linguistics, literature and culture, thus broadening their perception of humanity and its varied manifestations.
2. Teach them to use both oral expression and writing as means of knowing, understanding, and evaluating their experience and their reading, and as a means of sharing their insights with others.
3. Prepare them to enjoy language, literature and culture throughout their lives as a source of knowledge and aesthetic pleasure, a mode of encountering, evaluating and serving diverse minds and attitudes, a vehicle for communication and action, a means of historical understanding, and a source of spiritual insight in a broader sense.
4. Provide students with a specific program to improve and monitor all language skills at each level of course work. Virtually all courses are taught in Spanish. Extensive research and scholarly papers are required, including work written in Spanish.
