Program Purpose
The purpose of the Spanish Pedagogy M.A. is to prepare graduate students who desire to enter the field of Spanish language teaching with additional understanding, knowledge, and pedagogic skills beyond those acquired at the B.A. level in order to be an effective teacher in the Spanish classroom and/or a successful student in a doctoral program in foreign language education.
The program is designed to provide a broad understanding of principles of foreign language teaching and learning, as well as to further students’ knowledge of Hispanic linguistics and literatures. It is also designed to establish habits of broad spiritual thought and appreciation that will provide a source of life-long personal betterment and service to the extended community.
Expected Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate competence in the Spanish language, including a knowledge of key aspects of Hispanic linguistics, as well as the ability to explain the language accurately to others.
2. Be able to discuss key aspects of Hispanic literatures and cultures, especially in the context of teaching them to others.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of principles of foreign language learning, including theories of language acquisition, history and methods of language teaching, best practices for teaching the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, and assessment of language and culture learning.
4. Be able to explain and evaluate published research studies in foreign language education, plan and conduct original research, analyze the data collected, and report the findings in a five chapter M.A. thesis that conforms to APA style.
